Students learn valuable financial skills in Business School challenge

150 students from 15 colleges across the region will take part in a two-day online interactive Investment Challenge on 23 & 24 June hosted by Alliance Manchester Business School.

The project develops students’ skills in finance and improves their business awareness. It is funded and supported by Alliance Manchester Business School and delivered in partnership with Global Investor Simulations.

The Year 12 students – studying at sixth forms and colleges across Greater Manchester and beyond – will compete online in pairs in Finance Lab, the business simulation game, as part of the Investment Challenge.

The event transforms trading on the financial markets into an enjoyable collaborative learning experience, which enables students to use their maths and business knowledge and apply their team working and problem-solving skills.

The challenge is facilitated by Global Investor Simulations and is an opportunity for students to engage with University staff and students.  On the day of the challenge, student ambassadors from the Business School will be there to support the students and talk to them about university life.

Professor Fiona Devine, Head of Alliance Manchester Business School, said: “The Investment Challenge for A-level students follows on from our work with year 10 pupils in a similar simulated trading event, the Stock Market Challenge, which was held in April.

“The challenge gave the students the opportunity to develop worthwhile skills such as team-building and problem solving, as well as an understanding of how these skills can be used at University and in their working life, whichever career path they choose.

“Developing the skills of students, as well as igniting their interest in the financial services industry, is a vital part of the University’s role, particularly if we are to continue to attract and educate the financial experts of the future.”

The participating colleges are: Aquinas Sixth Form, Holy Cross Sixth Form, Loreto College, North Chadderton Sixth Form, Oldham Sixth Form College, Rochdale Sixth Form, Runshaw College, Sale Grammar School, St. Ambrose College, Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form, Stretford Grammar School, The Blue Coat School Oldham, William Hulme's Grammar School, Winstanley College and Xaverian Sixth Form College
